Second Straight Shutout for Stevens Women's Tennis
ALFRED, N.Y. (September 17, 2011) – For the second-straight outing, the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team won each of its matchups as the Ducks defeated Alfred University 9-0 on Saturday afternoon. Stevens (4-0, 2-0 Empire 8) won each singles match in straight sets and the closest doubles contest of the day was 8-2. The Saxons drop to 1-4 and 0-3 in the Empire 8 with the loss.
The first match of the day to finish was third doubles, where senior Morgan Scalzi and freshman Danielle Stewart dominated 8-1. Senior classmates Nicole Portner and Mine Bese teamed up to take second doubles 8-2 and freshman Jessica Bourque and sophomore Lisa Tessitore were victorious at first singles by an identical 8-2 score.
Portner continued the momentum, easily putting away second singles 6-0, 6-1 before Tessitore made the win official with her 6-2, 6-0 win at fifth singles.
Stewart and Bese nearly had sweeps, winning 6-1, 6-0 at third and fourth singles, respectively.
Alexandra Handel had the most competitive match of the day, though that entailed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Emily Eisenberg (Oyster Bay, N.Y.). Bourque wrapped up the day with her 6-2, 6-2 vicotry at first singles.
With the shutout on Saturday, Stevens has now won 33 of 36 head-to-head pairings this season.
