St. John Fisher Men's Soccer Gets Second Win Over Potsdam
The St. John Fisher College men’s soccer team defeated SUNY Potsdam 3-0 this afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Growney Stadium.
In the 40th minute, Jake Backscheider opened the scoring for Fisher with a perfect header past Potsdam goalkeeper Jake Gyder. The goal came off of a corner kick from Sean Fishel, who placed the ball to the wide open Backscheider.
The score would remain 1-0 until the second half, when Fisher’s Connor Julien added an insurance goal off of a penalty kick in the 52nd minute. Fisher was awarded the kick after a tackle from behind in the box. Julien stepped up for the kick and outwitted Gyder for a goal on the left side.
With the game winding down, Fisher continued its pressure to the very end, and added another goal in the final minute. John Crean sent a long ball into the box from midfield and connected with Austin Buckley on a header.
Fisher’s Kyle Metcalfe recorded five saves in the victory for his second shutout of the season. Gyder would finish with nine stops for Potsdam.
With the win, Fisher improves to 2-5 on the season, while Potsdam falls to 3-3-1.
