Ithaca Powers to Pair of Straight-Set Victories at Kean Cougar Classic
Union, N.J. – The Ithaca volleyball team (5-5) powered to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 27-25) sweep of Philadelphia Biblical (5-7) before taking Goucher (4-6) in straight sets also, 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-22), on day one of the 2011 Cougar Classic at Kean.
The Bombers took the first two points of the day on their way to the first of six-straight set victories.
After four consecutive Bomber points over the Crimson Eagles, Ithaca held a 19-12 advantage which they maintained for a 25-20 first-set victory.
Ithaca ran away with the second against Philadelphia Biblical with a 25-13 set. The Bombers started off slow, knotted at 9-9, before going on a 12-2 run for a 21-11 cushion and polishing it taking four of the final six points of the game.
The Bombers snapped a two-game losing skid edging the Crimson Eagles 27-25 in the third.
Junior Marissa Weil (Corning West/Corning) led the Bombers’ offensive efforts with 15 kills, while sophomore Nicki Readie (Pascack Hills/Montvale, N.J.) dug out 16 times and senior Jessica Hoeffner (Hauppauge/Hauppauge) 12. Junior Marissa Woodcome (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford) dished out a match-high 27 assists.
Serving led the Bombers to another straight-set win in match two. Seniors Elizabeth Previte (Hunterdon Central/Flemington, N.J.) and Chelsea Hayes (Northern Valley Regional/Haworth, N.J.) each served up seven aces en route to the team posting 17 aces against the Gophers.
The Bombers suffered an early 6-1 deficit before Previte’s serve and flurry of aces put Ithaca ahead, 11-8. Hayes’ serve and a handful of aces all but put the set away in Ithaca’s favor, 25-11.
Ithaca opened the second frame, 3-0, before Previte led the march to a 17-8 gap and Hayes closed out the set, 25-10.
The teams battled in the third and final stanza, but Ithaca pulled out the 25-22 decision-making victory on a solo block by senior Kate Thoene (Voorhees/High Bridge, N.J.).
