Preseason Favorite W&J Tops Wittenberg 4-0
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Junior midfielder Erin Barno (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) scored the Presidents’ first goal of the season and classmate Amanda Pflumm (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) racked up three assists as Washington & Jefferson defeated Wittenberg 4-0 in the 2011 field hockey season opener for both squads Thursday night at Cameron Stadium.
Barno opened the scoring just under three minutes before halftime after lifting a shot over sprawling goalie Jenny Schaafsma. Pflumm assisted on the opening goal.
Four minutes into the second half, Barno set up freshman midfielder Victoria Cox (Dover, Del./Milford) for a 2-0 lead.
Junior forward Jennifer Marabella (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name), the first All-American in W&J field hockey history, made it a 3-0 game after banging home Pflumm’s shot with 11 minutes left. The goal was the 32nd of her career.
Freshman midfielder Catherine Beaudoin (Barkhamsted, Conn./North Western Regional) tapped home the final goal off a feed from Pflumm.
Sophomore goalie Harley Straub (Richfield, Pa./East Juniata) went untested in her collegiate debut as the Presidents’ defense did not allow a shot on goal the entire evening. W&J outshot the Tigers overall by a 15-1 margin. Schaafsma made seven stops for Wittenberg.
