Stevens Volleyball Wins First Two Matches of Season

NEW YORK, N.Y. (September 1, 2011)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s volleyball team started off its 2011 season with two wins at Hunter College on September 1, defeating Hunter in five sets, 3-2, and then topping Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham, 3-0.

In the opener against Hunter, the Ducks came away with a hard-fought five-set match victory, 21-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-10, 15-8.

Junior Maggie Kowalska led the team with 19 kills and also tallied six total blocks and three service aces. Kowalska also had 19 digs. Sophomore Chrissy Dickinson was not far behind with 18 kills. Sophomore Samantha Gates posted a team-high 44 assists in the five-set match, while fellow sophomore Mary Caulson was the top back-court defender with 22 digs.

Mikayla Floyd, another sophomore, chipped in 15 digs and nine kills for the Ducks in the first match. Senior Kate Janes added 10 digs and four total blocks

In sweeping FDU-Florham by scores of 29-27, 25-17, 25-21, Kowalska once again led the team with 12 kills. She also had eight digs, recorded five services aces and had three blocks. Dickinson posted eight more kills, while Gates put together an all-around performance with 23 assists, 14 digs and six aces.

Floyd had another solid defensive effort with 17 digs while adding five kills. Sophomore Hannah Gasper tallied 10 digs, and freshman Katie Hall added five kills and four digs.

The Ducks are back on the court on Saturday and Sunday, September 3-4, as they travel to Haverford College for a weekend tournament. They take on Frostburg State University at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the first match.
