Stevens Field Hockey Comes Back from 3-1 Deficit to Down FDU-Florham, 4-3
MADISON, N.J. (September 21, 2011) – Junior Marguerite Chavez notched the game-winner with 5:07 remaining in the second half as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team earned a 4-3 come-from-behind win over host Fairleigh Dickinson University – Florham on a rainy night at Shields Field in Madison, N.J.. Chavez, senior Mallory Swanson, sophomore Megan Traub, and freshman Jillian Fiebel all scored goals for the Ducks who improved to 2-4 on the year.
Stevens jumped on the board first when Swanson scored on a penalty stroke for the second time in as many games, but that lead was short lived and something the Ducks would not experience again until late in the contest.
FDU (5-2) tied the game in the 20th minute when sophomore Lanie Andrews (Sayreville, N.J.) converted a long breakaway for the score. The Devils took a 2-1 lead into the intermission thanks to a late tally from Corey VanOrden (Sussex, N.J.).
Junior Kelsey Kistle (Sandyston, N.J.) made it 3-1 FDU 5:31 into the second half before the Ducks started their comeback with 16:35 to play.
Traub knocked in her second goal of the season off a penalty corner started by senior Jillian Price. Price was credited with the assist on the play that brought the Ducks within one (3-2).
Fiebel scored her second in as many contests, putting away a rebound 5:17 after Traub’s goal and Chavez scored the game-winner with 5:07 to go in the same fashion. The goal was Chavez’s first since 2009, a year in which she led the team points as a freshman. She missed much of the 2010 season due to injury.
Stevens goalkeeper Krysten Suarez made nine saves and earned the win in goal. Her counterpart, sophomore Tess Loughran (Newton, N.J.) stopped nine shots but took the loss. The Ducks ended the game with a 15-13 advantage in shots and a 16-12 edge in corners.
Stevens has now scored 13 goals in its last three games.
