Stevens Perfect after Day One of E8 Crossover

ELMIRA, N.Y. (September 24, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s volleyball team opened up its Empire 8 Conference crossover play with two wins at Elmira College on Saturday, September 24. The Ducks started off with a 3-0 victory over Utica College and followed up with a 3-1 win over St. John Fisher College on Day One of the crossover. Stevens is now 9-8 on the season and 2-0 in the Empire 8.

In the sweep of the Pioneers, 25-11, 25-14, 25-11, junior Maggie Kowalska paced the Ducks with 14 kills and recorded a team-high-tying four blocks. Kowalska also posted nine digs in the victory.

Ducks sophomore Mary Caulson led Stevens with 13 digs and also blocked four attack attempts by Utica. Caulson chipped in nine kills in the sweep, while fellow sophomore Chrissy Dickinson added six kills and four blocks.

Sophomore Sam Gates handed out a team-high 32 assists, and Mikayla Floyd, another sophomore, recorded nine digs and six kills.

Stevens’ sophomore libero Hannah Gasper played a solid back-line defense with 11 digs.

In the four-set triumph over Fisher, 25-13, 23-25, 25-14, 25-23, Dickinson led the way with eight kills. Kowalska added to her day with six kills and six digs.

A trio of freshmen, Reanin Glah, Kirsten Salmins and Katie Hall combined for eight digs, seven kills and three aces. Glah tallied four kills and three aces, Salmins dug out eight attempts and Hall chipped in three kills.

Gates and senior Andrea Bucko shared duties at the setter position and dished out 27 assists. Gates registered 17 assists, while Bucko put up 10 assists and three aces.

The Ducks are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, September 25, at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. They will play Nazareth College in the morning and follow up with a meeting with Hartwick College in the final match. Follow all the action at www.empire8.tv.
