Stevens Shuts Down Drew, 3-0
HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 28, 2011)- The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team posted a 3-0 shutout victory over the visitors from Drew University on Wednesday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex to improve the team’s record to 5-3-2 this season. Stevens used two early first half goals to build up a lead that it would never relinquish and nearly held the Rangers without a shot in the contest.
Stevens used two goals in the first 11 minutes of the game from freshman Ann Heine to produce an early lead that would never be threatened by the Rangers. Just second into the sixth minute, Heine capitalized off a pass from two Ducks players, senior Kathleen Schuckers and sophomore Bridgette Barden to net her first score. Schuckers pushed the ball down to the right corner of the field and sent a cross into the 18. Barden re-directed the pass to Heine who beat Drew’s goalkeeper to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead.
Barden has now registered at least one point in each of the last four games for the Ducks.
Heine tallied her second score five minutes and 25 seconds after her first when she played give-and-go with sophomore
Caitlin Labonte to beat the last Rangers defender and left Heine one-on-one with the goalie.
The Ducks tallied their third and final goal with just less than two minutes left in the first half off a corner kick from junior Brittany Odgers that found sophomore Kyle Stephens in the middle of the 18-yard box. Stephens jumped above all the Rangers defenders around her and headed in the pass to give the Ducks a commanding 3-0 lead. Both Odgers and Stephens picked up their fifth points of the season.
Stevens held Drew without a shot until 10 minutes left in the contest due to solid defense and consistent ball control by the Ducks’ midfielders and forwards. Stevens outshot the Rangers, 14-6, as Drew was able to fire off five shots in the waning minutes of the contest, four of which were on goal and turned away by junior Teegan Kelly. Kelly made two tremendous saves in a matter of seconds, as she had to lay out for one and get back up to deny the second shot from finding the back of the net.
Kelly played the final 45 minutes of the game and relieved sophomore Catherine Keough, who earned the victory without having to make a save in the first half.
Stevens also had a slim, 7-4, advantage in corners, all seven coming in the first half and all four were earned by Drew in the final 45 minutes.
