Callanan Scores 90th-Minute Goal to Give Ithaca Win Over TCNJ, 2-1
Elizabethtown, Pa. – Sophomore Amanda Callanan (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) found the back of the net in the 90th minute to propel Ithaca’s women’s soccer team (1-0-0) past nationally ranked #8/#12 The College of New Jersey (0-1-0), 2-1, in come-from-behind fashion Saturday afternoon at the 2011 Blue Jay Classic.
Trailing 1-0, junior Rachael Palladino (Lansing/Lansing) collected and put away a deflected ball from junior Julie Winn (Sutton/Sutton, Mass.) to knot the game at 1-1 in the 68th minute. After more than 20 scoreless minutes, Callanan recorded the deciding goal on her only shot of the game as she capitalized on a rebound from the keeper at 89:08. No shots were taken during the final 52 seconds of play.
TCNJ held a 39-6 shot advantage in a game that served as a rematch of a 2010 NCAA tournament game where the Lions defeated the Bombers, 3-0. The Lions also held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Junior Becca Salant (Holliston/Holliston, Mass.) made 13 saves in her first complete collegiate match, allowing just one goal in the 34th minute.
