Stevens Tops Nazareth in Empire 8 Women's Tennis Opener

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 3, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team downed Nazareth College by the score of 8-1 on Saturday in both teams’ first conference action of the season and the Ducks’ first home match of 2011. Stevens (2-0) swept the doubles competition and each of their five singles victories came in straight sets. Sophomore Lisa Tessitore and freshman Jessica Bourque got things going with an 8-3 win over Alison Tepas (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Alex Vizgaitis (Fayetteville, N.Y.) at first doubles. Shortly afterwards, Morgan Scalzi and Danielle Stewart won at third doubles and Nicole Portner teamed with Mine Bese to take second doubles, with both latter pairs winning handily by identical 8-2 scores. At singles, Bese was the first Duck to dispatch her opponent, taking down Cara Yinger (Fayetteville, N.Y.) in fourth singles 6-2, 6-1. Bourque then clinched the match for the home team by winning her first singles match over Vizgaitis; 6-1, 6-1. Stewart, Alexandra Handel and Tessitore also won their head-to-head matchups for Stevens, with Tessitore sweeping fifth singles 6-0, 6-0. In the day’s final match Tepas was able to prevent the shutout and come away with a 6-4, 7-5 second singles victory for Nazareth.
