RAMAPO, N.J. (September 2, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team opened 2011-12 with a 7-2 win at Ramapo College on Friday afternoon, earning wins at first and second doubles and Nos. one, two, three, four and sixth singles. Freshman Jessica Bourque>, senior captain Nicole Portner, and freshman Danielle Stewart all earned wins in singles and doubles to lead the Ducks.
In doubles action, Bourque and Portner notched a win out of the first singles spot, downing senior Laura Strandberg (East Brunswick, N.J.) and junior Brittany Pitts (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) 8-2. Scalzi and Stewart earned an 8-3 win at No. 2 singles over junior Hayley Downing (Cliffside Park, N.J.) and sophomore Stephanie Abrecht (Manasquan, N.J.).
Bourque rolled 6-0, 6-2 in No. 1 singles over Strandberg, and Portner followed her with a second-singles win, defeating senior Jywel Almirante (Newton, N.J.), 6-3, 7-5. Stewart earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Downing out of the third slot which clinched the match, and senior Mine Bese downed senior Nicole Pitts (Pompton Lakes, N.J.), 6-2, 6-3 at fourth singles. Junior Alexandra Handel earned a sixth-singles win over Abrecht, 6-3, 6-2 to round out the Ducks’ scoring.
