St. John Fisher Stifles Elmira in First Half Leading to a Double-Digit Win
The St. John Fisher College women’s basketball team defeated host Elmira 74-61 on Friday night in Elmira, NY. The conference win pushes the Cardinals record to 9-10 overall and 5-3 in the Empire 8. With the loss Elmira drops to 7-12 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
Sydney Bloomstein powered the Cardinals with her performance beyond the arc, going 4-for-7 for 17 points. Camaryn Buckner led the Cardinals in scoring and rebounding, finishing with 20 points and seven caroms. Portia Velasco filled the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds and two assists. Eight different Cardinals scored in the contest.
Fisher led the entire way, leading by as many as 20 points in the first half before pushing the lead to its widest margin at 25 with 10:44 remaining in the game.
Fisher gained control of the game very early on, holding Elmira to just two field goals over the first 12 minutes of the game. At the 7:53 mark in the first half the Cardinals held a demanding 23-4 lead over the Soaring Eagles. Buckner led the team with 13 points in the half while Portia Velasco contributed eight points and five rebounds. Bloomstein and Brooke Seavitt each added five points for the Cardinals in the period.
The Cardinals defense stifled Elmira’s shooting in the first half, holding the Soaring Eagles to 7-for-30 from the field and just 1-for-10 from beyond the arc. Fisher shot 13-for-25 from the field in the first, leading to a commanding 34-18 lead heading to the locker rooms. This was all done with Meghan Soja on the bench with just two points as she picked up two quick personal fouls.
