St. John Finisher Finishes Road Trip with Victory over Alfred
The St. John Fisher College women’s basketball team completed its five-game road trip with a 74-63 win over the host Alfred University Saxons on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Fisher is now 10-10 on the season and 6-3 in the Empire 8, finishing with a 4-1 record on the road trip.
In a game that saw 18 lead changes, the Cardinals were able to take the advantage for good with 3:21 remaining in the contest. After holding a 10-point lead in the second half, Alfred battled back to tie the game at 59-59, but could not overthrow the visiting Cardinals.
Holding a two-point lead at 61-59, Meghan Soja completed a traditional three-point play to jump start the Cardinals scoring streak over the final minutes, with Fisher outscoring the hosts 15-4 in the final four minutes.
Fisher was able to make 11 of its 22 free throws in the final 2:51, culminating in the team’s 11-point victory. The Cardinals won the shooting statistics in the game, going 79% from the charity stripe, compared to Alfred’s 57%. The Cardinals also shot 50% from behind the arc and 44% from the floor, compared to Alfred’s 33% and 38%.
The first half saw back-to-back action with Fisher holding its largest lead of the stanza at eight points with the score at 34-26. Soja led with 14 points in the half, while also grabbing three rebounds.
Soja led all scorers with 26 points, a career-high for the senior. She also had five rebounds and two steals in the win. Portia Velasco was the only other Cardinal to score in double-digits, finishing with 22-points, six rebounds and four assists, while going a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line.
