Ithaca Women's Track & Field Powers to Eighth Empire 8 Crown
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca women’s track & field team dominated the Empire 8 Indoor Track & Field Championships scoring 253 points, more than the other five teams combined, to place first and win its fifth straight title on Saturday at Glazer Arena. The Bombers have won eight of the nine contested championships in conference history.
Senior Emma Dewart (Barker/Barker) set Empire 8 records in the 60-meter hurdles, the high jump and the long jump, while qualifying for the ECAC championships in each. She was named Empire 8 Women’s Field Athlete of the Meet.
The Bombers won eight of the meet’s 15 events and tallied 22 All-Empire 8 selections during the victory.
Dewart won the 60 hurdles in 9.03, the long jump with a 5.70-meter performance and the high jump with a 1.68-meter clear in a jump-off over teammate junior Amanda Rissmeyer (Watchung/Millington, N.J.) who placed second with a 1.63-meter clear, also qualifying for ECAC’s.
The Bombers also went one-two in the 800 and mile runs. Junior Jenn Randall (Cincinnatus Central/Cincinnatus) won the 800 in an ECAC-qualifying 2:22.30 and freshman Hannah Wright (Kennett/Tamworth, N.H.) finished as runner-up in 2:27.47, while freshman Alexa Rick (Elyria Catholic/Elyria, Ohio) won the mile in 5:25.37 and classmate Emily Smith (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) followed with a 2:25.61 performance.
Senior Molly Quinn (C.W. Baker/Baldwinsville) clocked a 19:14.17 first-place finish in the 5,000, while senior Julie Orlando (Haverford/Havertown, Pa.) cleared an ECAC-qualifying height of 3.35 meters in the pole vault to win the event.
The Bombers had four additional runner-up performances. Frshman Rachel Friedman (Rondout Valley/Stone Ridge) finished the 200 dash in 27.37, freshman Harmony Graves (Ithaca/Ithaca) crossed the finish line of the 400 in 61.85, freshman Emilia Scheemaker (Scarborough/Scarborough, Maine) hit 10.83 meters in the triple jump and senior Jessica Hoeffner (Hauppauge/Hauppauge) hit the ECAC standard in the weight throw with a 15.35-meter toss.
Ithaca clocked first-place finishes in both championship relays winning the distance medley relay in 12:57.60 to qualify for the ECAC championships and the 4x400 in come-from-behind fashion with a 4:13.87 finish.
