St. John Fisher Rallies From 20 Down To Beat Tomcats
The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team overcame a 20-point deficit in the second half and ended the game with a 15-2 run to defeat Thiel College 71-69 on Saturday in the consolation game of the Catholic University of America Holiday Tournament in Washington, D.C. With the win, Fisher improves to 4-6, while Thiel falls to 2-9.
Fisher trailed 54-34 with 13:14 left in the game, but cut the lead in half at 64-54 with 4:42 remaining. Thiel led 67-56 with 4:13 left, but the Cardinals allowed just one field goal for the remainder of the game.
Fisher scored 11 straight points to tie the game at 67s before the Tomcats took the lead with 47 seconds left. Fisher tied the game up at 69-69 after two free throws from Meghan Soja with 24 seconds left and earned the win with a big defensive stop on the other end.
Freshman Sydney Bloomstein stole the ball on baseline and hit Portia Velasco with an outlet-pass. Velasco drove the length of the court for the game-winning layup with 4. 8 seconds left.
Thiel quickly inbounded the ball and attempted a 3-pointer shot at the buzzer, but sophomore center Camaryn Buckner blocked it to seal the win.
Fisher trailed 36-27 at the half. The Cardinals jumped out to a 21-12 lead, but Thiel went on a 24-6 run over the final 9:47 of the first half.
Four of Fisher’s five starters scored at least 15 points. Soja led the Cardinals with 17 points, including 15 in the second half. She also added six rebounds and five assists. Buckner totaled 16 points, six rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots. Velasco and Bloomstein each scored 15 points. Velasco dished out six assists, while Bloomstein chipped in with four steals.
