Zavadska and Flannery Earn Weekly E8 Honors
Elmira senior Sasha Zavadska and Ithaca freshman Christine Flannery have been named the Empire 8 Women's Volleyball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Zavadska finished the week with a remarkable 4.12 kills, 3.12 digs, 0.59 service aces and 0.41 assists per set in a 5-0 week for Elmira. On Thursday against Alfred she finished with 10 kills, seven digs and five service aces while hitting .444. On Friday Zavadska pounded out a match-high 25 kills to go with 12 digs, hitting .259. She capped off the weekend on Saturday with 26 kills and 15 digs as Elmira defeated Salve Regina in a tight five setter. On the week the senior tallied 70 kills, 53 digs and 10 service aces, hitting .228. She was also named Most Outstanding Player of the Eastern Connecticut Tournament.
The Elmira College Women's Volleyball team has finished the Empire 8 regular season schedule in first place and earned the right to host the postseason tournament scheduled for Saturday, November 3rd and Sunday, November 4th. The Soaring Eagles will travel to Cortland on Tuesday, Oct 23 for a dual match before heading to NYU for the final tournament of the regular season.
Flannery recorded a trio of career-best performances and helped the Bombers to a 3-1 week and a berth into the Empire 8 Championship Tournament. She had 13 kills in a 3-1 victory over visiting Oneonta on Tuesday night and six aces and five assists in a 3-0 sweep of Alfred on Sunday. She ranked second on the team with 45 kills on the week, while adding 14 assists, a team-best 14 aces, 35 digs and three block assists.
The Bombers will wrap up regular-season action on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Fredonia. Ithaca plays the host Blue Devils at 11 a.m. and Hiram at 1 p.m.
