Ithaca Wins 2012 Empire 8 Women's Cross Country Title; Stevens' Regan Takes Individual Crown

For the tenth time in the history of Empire 8 Athletic Conference, the Ithaca women’s cross country team captured the conference title, doing so by accumulating 27 points on Saturday at the 2012 Empire 8 Cross Country Championships hosted in Saratoga Spa State Park.  The Bombers remain the only school to win the title since the conference began sponsoring the sport in 2003.
 
Utica College placed second with 75 points, while Nazareth took third with 107 points. Stevens Institute of Technology (fourth, 108), Houghton (fifth, 109), St. John Fisher (sixth, 126), Hartwick (seventh, 169) and Alfred (eighth, 249) filled out the remainder of the team standings.
 
On a day that featured blue skies and mid-sixty degree temperatures, the Empire 8 women produced what wound up being another memorable conference meet.
 
Freshman Amy Regan of Stevens was the individual champion, navigating the 5K course in 18:08.46. Regan is the first non-Ithaca runner to win the Runner of the Meet award. Sophomore Alexa Rick of Ithaca followed closely behind at 18:22.12, while freshman Ashton Villeneueve of Utica placed third (18:34.63). Freshman Anna Fay of Ithaca (fourth, 18:35.77) and Houghton senior Jillian Lewis (fifth, 18:38.58) were right on Villeneueve’s heels making for an exciting sprint to the finish.
 
Ithaca sophomores Anastasia Diamond and Emily Smith places sixth and seventh, respectively, in 18:47.00 and 18:50.98. Freshman Jaime Lisack placed eighth (18:51.54) to round out first-team honorees.
 
Second-Team All-Conference acclaim went to Carolyn Malone of Ithaca (ninth, 18:52.54), Katlin Shippy of Fisher (tenth, 18:53.68), Opal Bogdan of Ithaca (11th, 19:01.73), Sarah Depalma of Utica (12th, 19:04.36), Meghan Cass of Ithaca (13th, 19:06.06), Carly Graham of Ithaca (14th, 19:07.56) and Rianne Erlwein of Utica (15th, 19:12.69).
 
First-Team All-Empire 8 honors went to those who placed first through eighth, while Second-Team All-Empire 8 honors went to those who placed ninth through 15th.
 
Empire 8 teams will return to the course on Saturday, Nov. 10 at the NCAA Atlantic Region Championships hosted by Rochester.
