Germano and Caruso Honored by E8
Elmira sophomore Andre Germano and Utica junior Anthony Caruso have been honored as the conference offensive and defensive players of the week.
Germano was dubbed Empire 8 Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week as he scored the game-winner in the 55th minute to help EC down Utica 1-0 and earn a postseason berth in the Empire 8 tournament. After some quick passing up the field the sophomore and reigning Empire 8 Rookie of the Year drew a foul on a Pioneer defender in the box. He then calmly stepped up and drilled a liner into the right corner of the net, beating Utica keeper Anthony Caruso despite the goalie guessing the correct way. The Campinas, Brazil native now leads the Empire 8 with 12 goals and is tied for first with 27 points.
The Soaring Eagles return to action Friday in the semifinals of the Empire 8 tournament against top seeded Stevens.
Caruso allowed two goals in a 1-1 week for UC. He stopped six shots in net as the Pioneers topped Hamilton, 2-1, for the first time since 1984. He added seven saves in the Pioneers loss at Elmira on Saturday. He has allowed one goal or less in 13 games this year. The only goal allowed against Elmira was on a penalty kick.
In 17 games this year Caruso has compiled an 8-8-1 overall record, a 1.23 goals against average and four shut outs. In 51 career games played Caruso has a 1.25 goals against average, a school-record 30 victories, 14 shut outs and 181 saves.
The Pioneers final match of the season against Houghton, originally scheduled for Tuesday night, has been postponed due to Hurricane Sandy. The contest will be made up on Wednesday, Nov. 7th at 7 p.m. on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
