New York, NY – The Elmira College Women’s Volleyball team swept Rutgers Camden 3-0 in the ECAC Semifinals but fell short of its second consecutive ECAC Championship dropping a 3-1 tilt to host NYU Saturday afternoon.
The Soaring Eagles were hitting on all cylinders as they swept Rutgers-Camden 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-21) Saturday afternoon in the ECAC Metro-Upstate Tournament Semifinals hosted by NYU.
The Soaring Eagles got off to a quick start in the opening set downing Rutgers-Camden 25-19. EC hit 2.67 as a team in the frame finishing with 12 kills to just four errors. Elmira continued to show its domination in the second stanza winning easily 25-14. Rutgers-Camden really struggled with its accuracy finishing with more errors (9) than kills (7). EC saved its best set for last pounding out 17 kills compared to just six errors as it gritted out a tough third set win, 25-21, to take the match.
Taryn Rumsey ’14
led the Soaring Eagles hitting .303 with 14 kills, eight digs and just four errors.
Sasha Zavadska ’13 finished with nine kills and 11 digs, while
Molly Short ’13 dished out 28 assists and added seven digs.
Catherine Miller ’14 and
Francene Cicia ’13 were solid defensively tallying 12 and eight digs, respectively, while
Cicia also pinpointed two service aces.
Amanda Matson ’13 hit .278, registering six kills and three blocks.
In the championship match Elmira played with great heart and was in every single set but fell 3-1 (25-27, 25-23, 21-25, 22-25) to the Violets. EC defeated NYU in five sets at Elmira last year to claim the ECAC title, but the Violets got their revenge on Saturday on their home court.
The Purple and Gold played the first three sets with great precision as the team combined for 50 kills and just 11 errors over the first three games. In the fourth set the Soaring Eagles struggled finishing with seven errors and just six kills.
Zavadska paced Elmira with 16 kills and 19 digs, while
Rumsey added 14 kills and eight digs.
Short tallied a match-high 33 assists along with 17 digs.
Miller and
Cicia also added double digit digs with 17 and 11, respectively. Meanwhile,
Matson recorded nine kills and five blocks.
The EC Women’s Volleyball team ends their season with a 23-13 record as Empire 8 regular season champions and ECAC Tournament Runner-up.
