ROCHESTER, NY – Stevens Institute of Technology runner Amy Regan has been honored by the Empire 8 Conference yet again. After winning the Empire 8 Championship meet, which snapped a string of nine-straight by an Ithaca runner, she was named the Runner of the Meet. She has now been selected as both the Runner and Rookie of the Year for the Empire 8 Conference, as voted on by the league coaches.
Regan concluded the 2012 season by competing in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship on November 17th in Terre Haute, Indianapolis.
The Green Brooke, NJ native finished the meet in 40th place, with an overall time of 22:07.7 for the six-kilometer course. She improved her top time by 12 seconds, after she knocked a minute off her personal best at Regionals. A total of 277 runners participated in the event, which was hosted by the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at the LaVern Gibson Course.
Regan was granted an at-large bid to the national meet after placing ninth out of 277 runners at the NCAA Atlantic Regional the weekend prior. She became the first Stevens’ women’s cross country runner to receive all-region recognition and also became the first male or female Duck runner to qualify for the big race.
During the regular season, Regan competed just as well as she was the top Ducks runner at seven of the eight team-races this season.
In her first season at the helm, Erin Dinan has been named the Empire 8 Women’s Cross Country coach of the year. She guided Ithaca it its tenth straight conference championship, as nine Bombers earned all-conference honors. The team placed fifth at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals and earned a spot in the National Meet for the first time since 2009. Ithaca is the only program to garner the top coaching honor in conference history as former coach, Bill Ware was recognized nine times.
In addition to honoring Regan and Dinan, one member of each team was named that institution’s representative on the 2012 Women’s Cross Country Sportswoman of the Year Team. Empire 8 emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete’s experience in conjunction with an institution’s educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportswomen.
The first and second team all-conference teams were announced following the conclusion of the championship.
