Stevens Women's Volleyball Advances to E8 Title with Sweep of Ithaca

ELMIRA, N.Y. (November 3, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team moved onto the Empire 8 Conference Final with a sweep of Ithaca College in the semifinals at Elmira College on Saturday. With the victory, Stevens is back to .500 (17-17) on the season and will take on Nazareth College for a trip to the NCAA Tournament in tomorrow's championship at 12 p.m.
In the straight sets win, 25-14, 25-20, 25-21, sophomore middle hitter
Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) recorded 10 kills in 13 attempts for an incredible .769 hitting percentage to lead the Ducks to a .262 clip for the match. Ithaca hit just .027 in the contest.
Senior opposite hitter
Maggie Kowalska (Edison, N.J.) paced all players with 20 digs and added nine kills with six total blocks. Junior outside hitter
Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) also eclipsed double-digit digs with 11 and chipped in eight kills for the Ducks.
Junior setter
Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) registered a team-high 31 assists to go along with four digs and two aces, while senior middle hitter
Jillian Barrett(Philadelphia, Pa.) tallied five blocks, four kills and three digs from the front line.
On the defensive end, sophomore libero
Kirsten Salmins (Wyckoff, N.J.) posted six digs, while junior libero
Hannah Gasper (Bourne, Mass.) and freshman outside hitter
Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) each added four digs a piece. Thomas also picked up three kills.
Freshman setter
Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) helped out with five digs and two aces.
The Ducks and Golden Flyers square off in Elmira tomorrow after Nazareth defeated the top seeded Soaring Eagles in four sets in the opening match. Stevens took down Nazareth in five sets in the final Empire 8 Crossover in Utica on October 20.
