EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (December 2, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s swimming team won the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference title for a second-straight year, rolling to the team championship by 488 points over second place and NCAA Division I foe Siena College.
Sophomore Sharon Rooker (Forest Grove, Ore.), sophomore Brittany Geyer (Brunswick, Ohio), junior Louise Moores (Mukilteo, Wash.) and senior Marissa Douglas (Cumberland, R.I.) opened the fourth and final session with a winning time of 3:53.61 in the 400-yard medley relay. The time was good for an NCAA B-cut as well.
Freshman Elizabeth Heinbach (Cincinnati, Ohio) placed second in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking a 5:09.99 and earning 28 team points. Douglas was eighth in the event with a 5:18.09.
Moores turned in a 23.45 in winning the 50-yard freestyle. Her time was good for an NCAA B-cut and would have qualified her for last year’s national meet. Freshman Jennifer Rutledge (Suwanee, Ga.) was third (24.10) and sophomore April Lawson (Coronado, Calif.) was seventh.
Heinbach tallied a win in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:09.56, with Geyer taking second (2:09.86). Stevens ended up grabbing the top-four spots in the event as freshman Katlyn Christenson (Snohomish, Wash.) finished third and Rooker was fourth.
In the final event of the championship, Douglas, Rutledge, sophomore Nicole Miller (Peoria, Ill.) and Moores won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:29.40. That finish was good for an NCAA B-cut and would have made last year’s NCAA’s.
Stevens tallied three more NCAA B-cuts on the day to finish with 15 total cuts for the championship. Finishing behind the Ducks and Siena was SUNY New Paltz in third, New York University in fourth and Division I Fairfield University in fifth. Thirteen total institutions competed at this year’s event.
Moores was named the championships Swimmer of the Meet for the second time in as many years. She swam on four of the five winning relays and recorded four individual wins – 50-free, 100-free, 100-back, 100-fly.
Stevens will now turn its attention to 2013 with a training trip to Aruba in early January and its first and only home dual this season on January 19 vs. Johns Hopkins University.
