Ithaca Defense Clamps Down On Alfred For 68-37 Win
Alfred, N.Y. -- The Ithaca College women's basketball team (20-3, 12-1 Empire 8) held an opponent under 40 points for the seventh time this season, posting a 68-37 win at Alfred (7-17, 0-13 Empire 8). The Bombers remain tied atop the Empire 8 standings with Hartwick and will clinch the league's regular-season title and the right to host the Empire 8 Championship Tournament with either a win at Utica Saturday or a Hartwick loss to Stevens.
Ithaca's 20 win mark the 13th time the team has reached that total; a win at Utica Saturday would tie the program record of 21 regular-season victories.
Sophomore forward Jenn Escobido recorded her second straight double-double; her 20 points and 15 rebounds -- which came in just 23 minutes of play -- were both one short of her career-high totals.
All 14 Bombers played at least five minutes and two posted career-best scoring outputs: Ally Mnich notched nine points and freshman forward Francesca Cotrupe added four.
Ithaca, which ranks 24th nationally in scoring defense, held the Saxons to 24.6 percent shooting from the floor (14 for 57), marking the ninth time that a Bomber opponent has shot less than 30 percent from the floor.
Sophomore guard Kathryn Campbell scored 11 points in 20 mimnutes of action. Sophomore guard Mary Kate Tierney added eight points and her four assists matched a career best.
Freshman center Geena Brady pulled down seven rebounds. Tierney and senior guards Jessica Farley and Jacqueline Shinall each recorded a team-leading four assists.
The Bombers' win was their 36th straight over the Saxons -- extending their longest winning streak over any opponent -- and raised their all-time record against Alfred to 46-4.
