School Record For Men's 200 Medley Relay; Bombers Lead At State Meet
Webster, N.Y. – The Ithaca men's swimming & diving team set two school records and leads the team standings after the opening day of the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association and Empire 8 championship meet at the Webster Aquatic Center. Ithaca totaled 401 points on the opening day of the meet, and leads second-place Hartwick by 85 points.
Senior Jeff Rapp placed second in the finals of the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:52.87, which met the NCAA B qualifying standard and bettered the school-record time he set in 2011. Sophomore Taylor Van Cott placed sixth in the event finals in the 200 IM. His preliminary time of 1:56.96 ranks fifth all-time at Ithaca.
Ithaca's top quartet in the 200-yard medley relay placed first in the event finals with a school-record time of 1:32.51, which also met the NCAA B qualifying standard. The group included sophomore Connor White, junior Jake Robbins, Rapp and sophomore Zack Kundel. Ithaca also won the event at the 2011 meet and defended its championship.
Three Ithaca divers earned all-state honors on the 3-meter board, and all met the NCAA diving standard for championship scoring. Martin Brown was third overall with a total of 528.60, senior Derek Rand was fourth with a finals score of 509.00 and freshman Matt Morrison was sixth with a score of 499.40.
Freshman Clement Towner swam 4:41.25 in the prelims of the 500 free and then finished sixth in the event finals. Junior Chris Cadwell finished seventh in the finals of the 500 free after placing eighth in the prelims with a time of 4:43.07. Towner's time is the seventh-fastest in Ithaca program history and Cadwell's time is ninth-fastest at Ithaca.
Three Bombers swam in the championship final in the 50-yard freestyle. Kundel placed second in 20.98 seconds and senior Antoine Connors was fifth in 21.27 seconds. Robbins was eighth in 21.47seconds.
