ROCHESTER, N.Y. (February 22, 2012) – After one day of competition at the UNYSCSA/Empire 8 Championships in Rochester, N.Y., the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s swimming team is in first place with 261 points. The Ducks are followed closely by Ithaca College in second (246), Hartwick College in third (221) and Nazareth College in fourth (218).

In the prelims, senior Sian Pearson and freshman Nicole Miller went four-five in the 500-yard freestyle, and junior Marissa Douglas finished second in the 200-yard individual medley. Senior Hayley Hatfield and Louise Moores took third and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle, while Moores, freshman Brittany Geyer, freshman Sharon Rooker, and junior Allison Henning took third in the 200-yard medley relay.

Stevens swam extremely well in the finals, starting with the 500-free. Pearson won the event with an NCAA B-cut time of 5:00.70 and Miller finished third, clocking a 5:06.77). The duo combined for a total of 59 points. Senior co-captain Kim McCaffrey placed 15th in the 500-free, tallying the Ducks 12 team points (5:18.45).

Douglas was second in the 200-IM with a B-cut time of 2:08.16, while Moores and Hatfield went one-two in the 50-free with B-cut times of 23.79 and 23.80. Henning also had a solid swim, placing 13 as the trio earned the Ducks 74 team points in the event.

The 200-medley relay team also earned a win, turning in a B-cut time of 1:46.02 and getting the team 64 points to close out the Day 1 action. The Ducks will look to extend their edge on Thursday in the second day (of four) at the UNYSCSA/Empire 8 Championships.
