Ithaca Women's Swimming & Diving Team Captures UNYSCSA And Empire 8 Titles

Webster, N.Y. - The Ithaca women's swimming & diving team captured its fourth consecutive Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association championship, and its 13th straight Empire 8 championship following the final day of competition at the Webster Aquatic Center. Ithaca finished with 1,458 points, which was 176 more than the next closest team in a field of 14 schools.

Junior Carly Jones highlighted Ithaca's efforts on the final day of the meet with a school-record time of 2:17.31 to win the 200-yard breaststroke. That time also met the NCAA A qualifying standard and established new state and championship meet records. She was joined in the finals by junior Madi Sherry, who finished fifth in 2:28.21 and sophomore Lauren Brundage, who was seventh in 2:29.73.

Ithaca divers dominated the women's 3-meter competition as Ithaca earned three of the top-four places in the event, led by senior Jodi Costello with a score of 475.45 in the event finals. That is a school and championship-meet record score for 11 divers at 3-meter. Sophomore Korie Fackler was third with a total of 444.80 and graduate student Katie Kaiser was fourth with a total of 407.05. Costello's and Fackler's scores met the NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Ithaca placed four competitors in the finals of the 200-yard backstroke as senior Missy Keesler finished second with a time of 2:05.34, which met the NCAA B qualifying standard. Sophomore Emily Hoskinson was fourth in 2:07.02; freshman Kylie Bangs was seventh and sophomore Carlene Ostromecki finished eighth in the finals. Ostromecki's preliminary time of 2:07.19 is the fourth-fastest in Ithaca history and Bangs' time of 2:08.11 in the prelims ranks seventh on Ithaca's record board.

Sophomore Shelby Pascoe placed fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:50.57, the second-fastest time ever posted by a Bomber.

Ithaca also placed fifth in the finals of the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:38.06. The preliminary heats featured a group of Jones, Ostromecki, senior Cali DeSanto and freshman Megan Buisman who timed in at 3:37.55.

Ithaca will await announcement regarding selections to the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, which will be held March 21-24 at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
