No. 6 Stevens Cruises to Win Over Previously Unbeaten and 18th-ranked Hartwick
HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 4, 2012) – Sixth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology cruised to a 160.5-101.5 win over previously unbeaten and 18th-ranked Hartwick College in a men’s swimming dual-meet at the De Baun Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon. Prior to the action, Stevens honored its four seniors – Mark Bagniewski (Cranford, N.J.), Carl Nagle (Little Silver, N.J.), Matthew Smith (Cream Ridge, N.J.) and Ben Watkins (Michigantown, Ind.).
Stevens improved to 6-2 in dual-meets with the win, while the Hawks fell to 16-1. The Ducks took the top spot in 10 events.
Junior Greg Charriez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.), Nagle, junior Daniel Munt (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore Shawn Hanak (North Royalton, Ohio) started the afternoon with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, combining to finish the event in 1:36.65. Freshman Wesley Elford (Phoenix, Ariz.) won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:38.38, and junior Alex Benham (Raleigh, N.C.) placed second in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in 1:45.33.
Charriez and sophomore Henry Hernandez (Chico, Calif.) finished first and third in the 100-yard backstroke (52.93, 54.59), and Nagle notched a third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.07. Junior John Hu (Oak Harbor, Wash.) and freshman Price Hu (Oak Harbor, Wash.) went one-two in the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.49, 1:56.80), while Hanak and Nagle did the same in the 50-free, carding a 21.98 and 22.17, respectively.
Sophomore Joe Huyett (Blandon, Pa.) tallied a third in the 100-yard freestyle (49.05), with Charriez and sophomore Nick Noga (Oriskany, N.Y.) finishing first and second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.54, 1:57.83). John Hu was second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:09.33, while Benham and Elford placed one-two in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking a 4:45.27 and 4:46.37, respectively.
Freshman Jack Rees (Temecula, Calif.) and Munt placed first and second in the 100-yard butterfly, recording times of 53.03 and 53.35, respectively, and Hu’s second win of the afternoon was in the 200-yard individual medley , notching a 1:57.01. Benham was third in the 200-IM (2:02.82).
In the final event of the afternoon, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Huyett, sophomore Elijah Davis (Broomfield, Colo.), Hanak and John Hu teamed to get a win with a time of 3:12.52.
