FARMINGDALE, NY- Cody’s Ciolino’s (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) goal with 44 seconds remaining broke a 9-all tie as the men’s lacrosse team defeated Farmingdale State 10-9 on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks, who led by five goals at one point late in the first half, improve their record to 2-1 while the Rams fall to 1-3.
Ciolino had three goals on the day and one assist. Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) also had three goals and assisted on three others. Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) contributed two goals and two assists. Bobby Cassidy (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) and Irvens Dupuy ((Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) both scored once.
Shannon Robinson led Farmingdale State with three goals. Ryan Oswald and Bobby Thomas both had two goals each. Tim Caden and Josh Lamantia both scored once.
The Rams took the early 1-0 lead on a man-up opportunity but the Hawks would quickly recover as they scored five straight times to take a 5-1 lead with 11:39 remaining in the second quarter.
An Oswald goal at 6:05 of the second would make it 5-2 Hartwick. The Hawks were then a man down after a penalty but it wouldn’t matter as Ciolino would score his second of the day to make it 6-2 Hartwick.
Twenty-one seconds later, Schaefer’s second of the day increased the Hawk lead to 7-2. The Rams would add a score with three seconds left in the second and ’Wick held a 7-3 lead at halftime.
In the third, the score remained 7-3 for more than half of the quarter until the Rams scored four straight times, three on a non-releasable man-up opportunity, to tie the game at 7-7 with 46 seconds left in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Hartwick would regain the lead on Schaefer’s third goal at 13:44. Schaefer would then assist Dupuy on his score with 4:23 remaining in the game.
Two more Farmingdale goals would tie the game at 9-9 with 1:52 left on the clock. Schaefer assisted on the winning goal when he fed to Ciolino who deposited the ball in the back of the net with 44 seconds left to play to give Hartwick the victory.
Nick Triano (North Andover, MA/St. John’s Prep) started in goal for Hartwick and had 14 saves. Patrick Delventhal had nine saves for the Rams.
Both teams had 37 groundballs. Hudson led the Hawks with 10 groundballs.
Mike Morrison (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) caused a team-best three Ram turnovers. Farmingdale led in shots 37-31.
Hartwick returns home to face cross-city rival Oneonta State on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
