St. John Fisher Gets Two More Wins to Close Tucson Trip
The St. John Fisher College softball team ended its time in Tucson, AZ on Thursday with two wins over the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and Medaille College to return to New York State with a 7-3 overall record. The wins also improve Fisher’s record at the Tucson Invitational to 27-21 in the five years the team has competed at the event.
The Cardinals matched-up with the two teams on Wednesday, earning an 11-0 win over Pitt-Bradford and a 20-0 win over Medaille, both in five innings.
Game One: Fisher 4, Pitt-Bradford 0
Though Fisher didn’t score as many runs as Wednesday, they only needed to score one in order to beat the Panthers this time, as Sarah Stefanon held Pitt-Bradford scoreless. Stefanon pitched all seven innings, fanning nine batters and allowing just one hit in the contest.
The win was also the fourth-straight shutout posted by the Cardinals, and extended the team’s winning streak to four games.
After a scoreless first inning, Fisher scored the one essential run in the second after the two Jennifers teamed up. Fisher’s Jennifer Martin, who got on base with a single, was brought in from third base on a shot by Jennifer Vanek past the Panther shortstop and into the outfield.
In the fifth inning, with two men on base, Carissa Carlson bunted to move two Fisher runners to second and third base. Martin then got her second hit of the day, bringing in Kayla Goodberlet from third.
Two more insurance runs were added in the bottom of the sixth inning when Goodberlet and Carlson brought in base runners who were stationed at second. Goodberlet scored Vanek, while Carlson pushed Goodberlet across the plate just two batters later.
Goodberlet totaled two hits, two runs and an RBI in the game, while Martin and Kelly Jones both had two hits.
Game Two: Fisher 7, Medaille 1
In the second game of the night, Kate Disbrow, who led off for the Cardinals, reached base on an error by the first baseman and eventually crossed the plate after Sarah Fordyce singled to left field. Kaylee Tallman then doubled to center field, pushing Meghan Burns to home plate. Finally, Jessica D’Angelo scored the Cardinals third-straight RBI after she hit a shot to centerfield, allowing Fordyce to make the score 3-0.
In the next inning, transfer Lindsey Holtz stepped in as a pinch hitter and knocked a rocket to right field which went for a double and scored Disbrow. The shortstop got on base when she doubled earlier in the inning. Fordyce then added her second RBI of the day, singling in Burns who pinch ran for Holtz.
Krista Robarge led off the fourth inning with a walk, and was bunted to second base by Burns. Robarge eventually made her way from second to home plate after two passed balls by the Medaille catcher.
Burns added the Cardinals final run in the bottom of the sixth inning with an inside the park home run.
Medaille’s lone run of the game came in the third inning after an error allowed a Maverick runner to advance to third base. She then scored on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Danielle Leone earned her fourth win of the season in the Cardinals fifth-straight victory. The junior totaled three strikeouts and walked two batters.
Burns went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, scoring three runs in the game. Fordyce led the Cardinals with two RBI while Tallman went 3-for-4 in her appearances.
