Nazareth edges SLU for first win
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Sophomore Amy McIntosh scored four goals and junior Erinn Wood added one goal and three assists Tuesday as Nazareth secured its first women's lacrosse win of the season with a 13-12 triumph over St. Lawrence at Lake Lytal Park in West Palm Beach.
The victory was the first of the season for the Golden Flyers (1-1), who play Drew Thursday at 12 p.m. St. Lawrence is 0-1.
Juniors Alyssa Johnston<, Kayleigh Pearson and Megan Cregan each scored twice for the Golden Flyers, who led 8-7 at halftime despite being outshot 17-13 in the first 30 minutes.
Nazareth never trailed in the second half, but the game was deadlocked at 10-10 after the Saints' Holly Noyes scored her third goal of the game with 9:09 left. Cregan and Johnston each converted free-position shots to give Nazareth the lead for good at 12-10. After St. Lawrence scored again, sophomore Kelsey McNaboe converted another free-position opportunity, Nazareth's sixth of the game, to enable the Golden Flyers to regain their two-goal lead with two minutes left.
In a see-saw first half, St. Lawrence took the lead in the first minute, before Nazareth answered with three straight goals -- Pearson, McIntosh and Cregan -- to take a 3-1 advantage. The Saints used a three-goal flurry of their own to regain the lead, but Nazareth took it back on goals by Johnston and McIntosh. Two more goals by the Saints made it 6-5 St. Lawrence, but Nazareth closed the half by scoring three of the last four goals to lead 8-7 at the half.
Wood and Pearson each scored as did freshman Suzanne Gray, who netted her first career goal.
McIntosh opened the second with a pair of unassisted goals to give Nazareth its largest lead at 10-7, before another three-goal flurry by the Saints tied the score for the final time at 10-10.
St. Lawrence had a 30-25 edge in shots, but Nazareth won 15 of 26 draw controls with Johnson winning six for Nazareth. Sophomore goalie Tara Prosak played all 60 minutes and had 12 saves and two caused turnovers.
