The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team got back on the winning track on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, with a decisive 15-2 victory over the visitors from Lehman College at Dobbelaar Field. The Ducks plated 13 runs in the first two innings and pounded out 14 hits to snap a four-game losing streak and improve their record to 7-6 on the season.

The Ducks did not wait long to get put some runs on the board, plating five runs on five hits in their first licks at the plate. Senior infielder Tom Phillips (Spring Lake, N.J.) started things off for Stevens with a walk and later scored on an RBI single by fellow senior designated hitter TJ Alcorn (Turnersville, N.J.). Graduated student infielder Matt Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J.) singled in his first at bat and also scored on Alcorn’s single to left after him and Phillips pulled off a double steal.

Sophomore outfielder Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) also walked in the opening frame and crossed the plate on a line drive single by senior outfielder Ryan Kiczek (Rutherford, N.Y.) for the third run in the first inning. Kiczek came into score after moving up on a wild pitch and then advancing another base on an overthrow pickoff attempt by Lehman’s pitcher.

Phillips walked twice in the game and collected a double in four at bats. He also scored three runs and drove in two more. Alcorn led the Ducks with four RBI in a percent 2-for-2 day at the plate and scored a run. In three official trips to the plate, Glassman stroked a double and two singles with three runs scored and two RBI.

Allen walked twice and scored two more runs in one at bat, while Kiczek batted 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and a run batted in.

In the second inning, Stevens scored eight more runs to go up 13-0, thus putting the game out of reach for the Lightning.

Freshman outfielder Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) came off the bench to stroke two doubles in two plate appearances with a run scored and one more driven in. Classmate and infielder Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.) walked twice, scored a run, drove in another and recorded one hit in three at bats.

Junior Kevin Mathews (Jackson, N.J.) improved his record to 3-0 this season after tossing six innings and scattering seven hits. Mathews struck out four batters while walking none and surrendered two earned runs.

Normally and outfielder, freshman Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) threw one inning in relief and allowed a hit and struck out one batter. The last two innings were thrown by graduated student Jeffrey Hart (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) who was perfect in his six outs with two strikeouts.

The Ducks are back on the diamond tomorrow at noon for a double header against CCNY.
