Scheibling, Buonacuore Key Stevens Win Over Springfield
CLERMONT, Fla. (March 15, 2012) – Senior attackers Jenna Scheibling (Long Valley, N.J.) and Michelle Buonacuore (Medford, N.J.) had five points apiece and junior goalie Meg Collins (Marshfield, Mass.) made 11 saves as the No. 13 Stevens Institute of Technology women’s lacrosse team earned an 11-9 win over Springfield College on Thursday afternoon in Clermont, Fla. With the win, the Ducks improve to 3-2.
The Ducks came out fast with the game’s first four goals. Freshman defender Amanda Ingersoll (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) started the scoring and sophomore attack Gabrielle Gordon (Flemington, N.J.) put the Ducks on top 2-0 thanks to a Scheibling assist. Scheibling and Buonacuore hooked up for the third tally and sophomore midfielder Kara Rafferty (Bayshore, N.Y.) came through unassisted with goal number four.
Sophomore attack Kelly Gallo (Westfield, Mass.) put the Pride on the board, but the Ducks continued their strong early play, running off three more unanswered scored to open a 7-1 lead. Junior midfielder Joey Galligan (Burlingame, Calif.), junior midfielder Spencer Waybright (West Hartford, Conn.) and Scheibling had goals with Buonacuore (two) and Scheibling notching assists.
The two squads split the final four goals of the half with Waybright and Buonacuore netting the Stevens scores as the Ducks took a 9-3 lead 9-3 lead into the locker room.
The Pride came out strong in the second half, going on a 3-0 run to pull within three at 9-6. Gordon scored her second of the day to make it 10-6 Stevens, but Gallo pulled Springfield within three again moments later. Scheling notched the final Stevens goal of the game, with the Pride scoring two-straight with four minutes left, but the Stevens defense clamped down and the two teams played scoreless lacrosse over the final four minutes.
Scheibling had three goals, two assists and three ground balls, while Buonacuore had a tally and four helpers. Waybright had two goals, with Rafferty scoring once and controlling four draws. Galligan had a goal and three draw controls, while defenders Ashley Carey (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Ingersoll each scooped up three ground balls. Gordon finished with a pair for the Ducks.
