Benham Leads Stevens Men's Swimming on Day 1 of NCAA's
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 21, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s swimming team opened competition at the 2012 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on Wednesday, and junior Alex Benham (Raleigh, N.C.) led the Ducks by earning the first All-America nod of his career. The Ducks tallied 16 team points overall.
The Ducks are currently tied for 16th overall. Kenyon College is in first with 129 points, with Denison second and Emory third. Amherst and Redlands round out the top-five.
Day 1 Preliminaries
Benham opened the action with an eighth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 4:31.09. Freshman Wesley Elford (Phoenix, Ariz.) earned a trip to the consolation final with a 4:32.26, which was good for 14th.
Junior John Hu (Oak Harbor, Wash.) placed 17th in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:51.99, missing the consolation final but .01.
Day 1 Finals
Benham’s 4:4:33.97 in the 500-free final was good for eighth place and 11 team points. His finish was also good for the squad’s first All-America accolade of the championship meet. Elford placed 12th in the consolation final to earn five points, clocking a 4:32.26.
