Home-Opener Sweep For Ithaca Softball

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca softball team (6-5) played its first home series of the 2012 season at the recently-renovated Kostrinsky Field and posted a convincing doubleheader sweep of SUNY Old Westbury by scores of 13-0 and 10-1. Both games were shortened to five innings due to the eight-run margin rule.

Ithaca 13, Old Westbury 0

The Bombers scored 10 runs in the second inning to and went on to the win in the first game of the afternoon. Sam Bender threw a five-inning shutout with two strikeouts. She allowed just three hits. Ithaca's offense was paced by junior Molly O'Donnell, who was 2-for-3 with a double. Rachel Dell'Orto had a bases-loaded triple while freshman Francesca Busa and freshman Monica Capolongo had two hits each. | Box Score

Ithaca 10, Old Westbury 1

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but Ithaca answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning and never looked back. Sophomore Sydney Folk started the inning with a solo homer to tie the score and the Bombers added three more runs on three additional hits.

Four additional runs crossed in the fourth inning highlighted by sophomore Rachel Dell'Orto's first-career home run, a three-run blast over the right field fence to give Ithaca a 7-1 lead. Back-to-back triples from Julianne Vincent and O'Donnell brought in another run. Junior Lindsey Johnson hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to clinch the victory, the first homer of her collegiate career. Jillian Olmstead earned the pitching victory with three strikeouts in five innings. She allowed two hits and a walk. | Box Score
