Fisher Softball Sweeps D'Youville in a Doubleheader
The St. John Fisher College softball team swept the visiting D’Youville College Spartans in a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader. With the two wins the Cardinals move to 9-3 on the season while the Spartans fall to 3-5 on the year.
Game One – Fisher 2, D’Youville 0
Fisher scored a run in the fourth and fifth inning to push the Cardinals to victory. In the fourth inning Kayla Goodberlet led off with a double to left center but the next two batters popped and flew out. With two outs Jennifer Martin came through in the clutch, doubling down the left field line to score Goodberlet for the eventual winning run.
The Cardinals added an insurance run in the fifth when Jennifer Vanek got on with an infield single to the pitcher. Goodberlet eventually got a base hit to left center, scoring Vanek.
Starting pitcher Danielle Leone worked out of jams in several innings but none proved as crucial as the top of the fourth. The Spartans got three hits in the inning but Leone struck out a batter looking, Goodberlet got the lead runner unassisted at third base before Martin ended the inning with a beautiful throw to home plate where Leanne Merchant tagged a runner out.
Leone went the distance to earn the shutout win with seven innings pitched, allowing six hits and just two walks while fanning three D’Youville hitters. The win moves Leone to 5-1 on the season.
Game Two – Fisher 6, D’Youville 0
Sarah Stefanon had a perfect game through five innings before finally letting up a hit with no outs in the top of the sixth inning. The starter went a complete game seven innings, throwing a one-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks. Stefanon is now 4-2 on the year.
Carissa Carlson and Sarah Fordyce each went 2-for-3 for the Cardinals with two RBI apiece, with Carlson also crossing the plate once. Goodberlet scored twice for Fisher while earning a hit. Kelly Jones, Kate Disbrow and Vanek also finished with hits.
The Cardinals got off to a hot start, scoring four runs in the first inning before adding two more in the fifth.
Softball will return to action at 3 p.m. on Monday when it travels to face Medaille College in Buffalo. Fisher faced the Mavericks twice down in Tucson, AZ, winning both games by a combined score of 27-1.
