Stevens Opens Strong at 2012 NCAA's
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 21, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s swimming team opened competition at the 2012 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on Wednesday. The Ducks totaled 51 team points and currently are in fifth place overall with a team total of 51 points. Emory University is in first place with 180 points and Williams College is in second.
Day 1 Preliminaries
In the opening day’s prelims senior Sian Pearson (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) started things with a school-record time of 4:58.41 to place eighth, while freshman Brittany Geyer (Brunswick, Ohio) took fourth in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:04.95. Geyer’s finish was also good for a new school-record.
Sophomore Louise Moores (Mukilteo, Wash.) was 13th in the 50-yard freestyle to earn a trip back to the consolation finals, with senior Hayley Hatfield (Dallas, Texas) checking in 25th.
In the final event of the Day 1 prelims, the 200-yard medley relay team of Moores, Geyer, freshman Sharon Rooker (Forest Grove, Ore.), and Hatfield took fifth place, clocking a 1:45.08.
Day 1 Finals
Pearson opened the finals with an eighth-place finish in the 500-free, touching at 5:00.61 to earn the team 11 points and the first All-America honor of the national championship meet. Geyer earned 11 more points with her eighth in the 200-IM finals, turning in a 2:05.38 and getting the first All-America nod of her career.
Moores’ 23.68 in the consolation final of the 50-free earned the Ducks five points and the team’s first honorable mention All-America accolade, while the same 200-medley relay squad from the morning session took seventh and 24 points in the final, combing for a time of 1:44.96. All four athletes earn All-America honors.
