Relays Shine as Stevens Women's Swimming In Fifth After Two Days at NCAA's

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 21, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s swimming team is in fifth place after two days of competition at the 2012 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Swimming and Diving Championships. The 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay teams both earned All-America honors with top-eight finishes while sophomore Louise Moores (Mukilteo, Wash.) took fifth in the 100-yard butterfly.

The Ducks currently have a two-day total of 115 points and are the top team in the state of New Jersey and Empire 8. Emory University is in first place (348) with Williams College, Denison University and Kenyon College rounding out the top-four.

Day 2 Preliminaries

The second day of competition began with the Ducks’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of senior Hayley Hatfield (Dallas, Texas), freshman Nicole Miller (Peoria, Ill.), freshman Sharon Rooker (Forest Grove, Ore.) and Moores placing seventh with a time of 1:35.31.

Junior Marissa Douglas (Cumberland, R.I.) was 22nd in the 400-yard individual medley (4:35.88), while Moores earned a trip to the 100-yard butterfly final with a sixth-place finish thanks to a 55.75. Senior Sian Pearson (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) tallied a 1:53.88 in placing 26th in the 200-yard freestyle, and the team of Rooker, freshman Brittany Geyer (Brunswick, Ohio), Moores and Hatfield were fourth in the 400-yard medley freestyle prelim.

Day 2 Finals

Hatfield, Miller, Rooker and Moores opened the finals by taking eighth in the 200-free relay, earning 22 team points and earning All-America nods. Moores took fifth in the 100-yard butterfly, touching at 55.62 and getting All-America honors. Her finish netted the Ducks 14 points.

In the final event of the day, the 400-medley relay finals, Stevens broke the school-record and placed fifth with its time of 3:47.32. That finished netted the team 28 points and sent Rooker, Geyer, Moores and Hatfield back with All-America honors.

In total, the Ducks earned nine All-America accolades on the second day of competition and have 16 overall. They have also earned one honorable mention All-America honor.
