ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick men’s lacrosse team led by as much as 16-1 in the third quarter and withstood a late Castleton State rally as they defeated the Spartans 17-10 on Tuesday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The Hawks improve their record to 4-3 while Castleton State falls to 1-5.
Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem North) and Joe Shields (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) both scored five goals to lead the Hawks. Hughes also assisted on two other scores. Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) had two goals and two assists. Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North), Giuseppe Rice (Peekskill, NY/Peekskill), Mike Morrison (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East), Dane Molina (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), and Max Schermerhorn (Concord, MA/Duxbury) all scored once.
Colin Murray led the Spartans with three goals. Zach Davidson and Nohea King both scored twice. Phil Patterson, Luke Titus, and Cam Ormiston all had one goal apiece.
The Hawks led 4-0 in the first period until Davidson’s goal made it a 4-1 game. That would be as close as the Spartans would get as the Hawks would fire off 12 straight goals spanning the first, second, and third quarters and have a commanding 16-1 lead with 10:35 left in the third quarter.
Castleton State would score six consecutive times to trail 16-7 with 4:56 left to play in the game. The Spartans would score three more times in the final 3:30 but it was not enough as Hartwick came away with the victory.
Nick Triano (North Andover, MA/St. John’s Prep) got the start in goal for Hartwick and had four saves in 41:32. Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) would relieve him and play 6:04 and record one save. Matthew Galvin (Medway, MA/Medway) came in to finish the game and stopped four shots.
Eric Horsfield started for Castleton State between the pipes and made nine saves. He was replaced by Tom Manley in the second half and he also had nine saves.
The Hawks outshot the Spartans 45-26. Hartwick had a slight edge in ground balls, 29-28.
Connor Hudson (Moriches, NY/William Floyd) scooped up six groundballs to lead ’Wick. He also won 10 of 16 face-offs.
