The St. John Fisher College softball team completed the season sweep of Medaille College with two wins on Monday afternoon in Buffalo. Fisher was able to handle the Mavericks for an 8-0 five inning victory in game one, and used a four-run seventh inning to defeat the host team 9-1 in game two.

Fisher defeated Medaille twice earlier this season during the Tucson Invitational, outscoring the Mavericks 27-1 in 20-0 and 7-1 victories.

After being held scoreless in the first inning, the Cardinals scored two runs in each of the following four innings to grab the mercy-rule victory over Medaille.  Senior Carissa Carlson led the second inning off with a double, and was later brought across the plate by freshman Meghan Burns on a fielder’s choice.  Fisher’s next batter, Kelly Jones, then saw the same result as she reached on a fielder’s choice to bring Sarah Fordyce in for the 2-0 lead.

In the next inning, Fordyce doubled with one out to bring in Leanne Merchant and Kayla Goodberlet.  Jones led off the fourth inning with a single and then advanced to second on a passed ball.  Second baseman Megan Zoerb picked up an RBI when she singled to bring Jones across the plate.  Zoerb later gained a run scored in that same inning when Merchant doubled her in from third.

The Cardinals sealed the seven-run victory in the top of the fifth inning, with Fordyce and Jones picking up two more runs.  Jones earned her second RBI of the day by bringing in the junior, while Zoerb later brought Jones across the plate with a single.

Danielle Leone earned her sixth win and fourth shutout victory on the mound, striking out five batters in the effort.

Fordyce finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate, while Jones and Merchant were both 2-for-3.

Game Two: Fisher 9, Medaille 1

Fordyce continued her dominance in the second game of the day by staying perfect from the plate and connecting on all three of her opportunities.  The junior got the Cardinals on the board in the fourth inning after she knocked a base hit to bring Merchant in from second.  Merchant reached base with a single, was advanced to second base on a sacrifice by Carlson and moved to third on a passed ball.

Medaille responded in the bottom of that inning by gaining its only run of the day on an unearned tally.  After adding two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, Fisher exploded for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game away for good.

Goodberlet opened the final inning with a triple and Merchant powered her home with a two-run shot over the outfield fence, her fifth home run of the year. Carlson followed with that allowed her to advance all the way to third on an error by the right fielder.  Fordyce kept her outstanding day going with another RBI to bring Carlson in to make it 8-1.  She would go on to earn the final run scored of the day after Jones singled her across the plate.

Sarah Stefanon fanned seven batters in her fifth win of the year, while Goodberlet went 3-of-4 with one RBI.  Outfielder Jennifer Martin earned an RBI in the game, while also hitting in three of her four plate appearances.  Jones also picked up two RBI and two runs scored in the Cardinals 11th win of the year.
