Hughes Hurts the Herons at Home

The St. John Fisher College women’s lacrosse team went on a 5-0 run over the final 17 minutes of the first half and picked up a 14-9 win over visiting William Smith College.

With the win, Fisher improves to 4-3 overall, while the Herons fall to 1-3.  It is the second straight year that the Cardinals have defeated William Smith.
 
With the game tied at 4-4, Fisher went on a 5-0 run over the final 16:26 of the first half to take a 9-4 lead at the half.   Taylor Hughes scored four of her six goals in the first half, including two during the 5-0 run.   Tori Suto scored on a free position shot with 5:57 left in the half, while
Melissa Leonard scored on a free position shot just 20 seconds later during the pivotal run.

William Smith failed to attempt a shot in the final 17 minutes of the first half, as the Cardinals outshot the Herons 19-6 over the opening 30 minutes.
 
The Cardinals led 10-5 midway through the second half, but the Herons rallied, scoring three goals in a 19-second span to make it 10-8 with just over 18 minutes left.

Fisher, however, responded, scoring the game’s next four goals.  Hughes netted her sixth of the day with 16:44 left and freshman Erin Ward scored her second of three goals with 14 minutes left.

Melissa Leonhard scored her third goal of the day with 7:11 left.

Fisher goalies Molly Naylon and Caroline Trpcevski combined for the win.  Naylon made three saves over the opening 41 minutes, while Trpcevski made five saves and allowed just one goal.
