St. John Fisher Earns Home Win over Geneseo
The St. John Fisher College women’s lacrosse team picked up its third-straight win with an 18-14 decision over the visiting SUNY Geneseo Blue Knights. With Thursday’s win, Fisher improves to 5-3 while Geneseo falls to 3-2 on the season.
Fisher opened the game with a 3-0 run, as the Cardinals scored three goals in 1:20 span, including back-to-back goals from Shannon McDermott.
Geneseo, however, answered with a 3-0 run of its own over a 1:19 span, tying the game at 3s with 24:44 left in the first.
Fisher’s Erin Ward scored consecutive goals to give the Cardinals a 5-3 lead with 23:12 left, but the Knights tied the game back up at 5-5 with 19:04 left.
The Cardinals regained the lead for good with a 3-0 spurt on goals by Melissa Leonhard, Emily Bryerton and Taylor Hughes.
Geneseo made it 8-7 with 12:40 left in the first, but Hughes won the ensuing draw and scored her second goal of the game just 10 seconds later.
Less than a minute later, Kristen Zylka scored her fourth goal of the year.
McDermott, who entered the game with goal on the year, scored her third of the game with just five minutes left in the half to help give the Cardinals an 11-9 lead at intermission.
Fisher pushed its lead to four at 13-9 on goals from Hughes and Bridget Alberts – 25 seconds apart – less than four minutes into the second half.
In the final 25 minutes of the game, both teams scored five goals, but Fisher’s early lead proved to be enough for the victory.
Bryerton scored three of her four goals in the second half, with the trifecta coming over a 9:49.
Hughes led the Cardinals with five points on the day, coming on four goals and an assist to increase her team-leading goal total to 33. Leonhard and McDermott both finished with a hat trick, while Ward also had three points on two goals and an assist. Alberts and Kristen Zylka also scored for Fisher, while Molly Naylon picked up her fifth win of the year with five stops in the victory.
