Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women’s Lacrosse team upended visiting Wells College, 18-10, Wednesday afternoon at Campus Field. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 6-1, while the loss drops the Express to 0-4.
EC got off to a quick 5-0 lead in the first four minutes of action behind two Meghan Pass ’12 (Owego, NY -- Owego Free Academy) goals and three points from Emma Schepers ’13 (Elmvale, ONT -- Team Ontario). Sarah Allen found the back of the net for Wells, but the Purple and Gold responded with three straight scores to open up an 8-1 lead that it would never relinquish. Elmira scored five more times in the first half to take a convincing 13-5 lead into intermission.
The Soaring Eagles registered the first three goals out of halftime to take an 11 point lead but the Express continued to play hard, tallying five straight scores. EC remained in control throughout scoring the final two goals to cruise to an 18-10 victory. Elmira outshot Wells 33-16 in the contest, held a 20-10 draw control advantage and had 59 ground balls compared to 33 for the Express. As a team the Purple and Gold went 4-for-6 on free position shots.
Pass led EC with five points on four goals and one assist, while picking up five ground balls. Samantha Risi ’14 (Coopersburg, PA -- Southern Lehigh) and Bridget Keefe ’14 (Florence, MA -- Northhampton) recorded three goals apiece, with Risi tallying a team-high nine ground balls. Lindsay Mitchell ’12 (Arnold, MD -- Arnold) chipped in with two goals, two assists and eight ground balls, while Rebecca Matturro ’14 (Smithtown, NY -- Smithtown) picked up eight ground balls and forced a team-high four turnovers.
LeAnna Presler ’14 (Livonia, NY -- Livonia) and Caileen Waldron ’15 (Egypt, NJ -- New Egypt) split time in net, each giving up five goals and recording one save. Presler earned the win for EC. Bethane Wright gave up 18 goals while making nine saves for the Express.
