St. John Fisher Rallies To Take Two From Utica
The St. John Fisher College baseball team picked up two wins on Saturday against visiting Utica College. Fisher cruised to a 7-0 win in the opener, as pitcher Jason Beaumont tossed a two-hitter and Ben Bostick stole his College-record 21
st base of the year. In the nightcap, Fisher scored a run in the bottom of the ninth, 10
th and 11
th innings and rallied to beat the Pioneers 6-5 in 11 frames. With the two wins, Fisher improves to 14-4 overall and 2-0 in the Empire 8.
Game One – Fisher 7, Utica 0
The Cardinals used three singles to score three runs in the first inning to take control. Fisher led 4-0 going into the sixth and tacked on three runs, including two RBI from Ryan Shaughnessy, who went 3-for-3 in the game with a triple.
Bostick went 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base, while Steve Karnyski scored two runs. Peter Krysztof added two singles.
Senior transfer Jason Beaumont allowed just two hits to improve his record to 4-1. He also struck out nine batters.
Game Two – Fisher 6, Utica 5 (11)
Fisher jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, but Utica scored two in the third and two in the fourth, and neither team was able to score again until the ninth.
Steve Karnyski doubled to start the game and scored in the first on an RBI-single from Bostick.
Fisher scored two in the second after Sean Osterman scored on a safety-squeeze by Chris Roeder. Roeder then scored on a triple by Karnyski.
Trailing 4-3 and down to its last out, Shaughnessy doubled off the fence to start the ninth-inning rally. After an intentional walk to Karnyski, Krysztof singled over the shortstop’s head to score pinch-runner Alexander Stacy, who took the place of Shaughnessy.
Utica regained the lead in the top of the 10
th scoring a run on a passed ball with the bases loaded. The Pioneers were held to just one run though as Osterman ended the inning with a double play, making a catch in center field and throwing out a runner at home to end the inning.
The Cardinals were again down to their last out in the 10
th before starting to rally. With two outs, Osterman was hit by a pitch and went to second after a walk to Brad Rush. Roeder, who was hitless on the day, came through in the clutch, singling through the right side to score Osterman.
After Tim Sylvester retired the Pioneers in order, the Cardinals won it in the bottom of the 11
th. Krysztof singled to start the inning and stole second. After walks to Klock and Nicholas Flemister loaded the bases, Osterman ripped the first pitch he saw over the left fielder’s head to score the game’s final run.
Karnyski finished with three hits in the win, while Osterman, Klock, Flemister and Krysztof each had two hits.
Fisher will host Utica for one, nine-inning game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
