Denhoff Scores Game-Winner in Waning Seconds

The St. John Fisher College men’s lacrosse team received late game heroics from Kyle Denhoff to grab the 9-8 win over host Hartwick College in the Empire 8 Conference opener for the both teams on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Cardinals improve to 5-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play while the Hawks fell to 4-4, 0-1.

Denhoff scored the unassisted game-winning goal for the Cardinals with just 11 second remaining in regulation to break the 8-8 tie.

Fisher only trailed once on the afternoon at 2-1 with 5:37 left in the first quarter before the Cardinals went on a three-goal run to gain control of the game.

Mike Byrnes started the run with an unassisted goal at 3:05 remaining in the first quarter followed by another unassisted goal by Greg Ramsden with 12:23 left in the half. Kory Smart, who assisted the first goal for the Cardinals to Mitch Ritchie, closed out the run, netting a score off a pass from senior Connor Henderson to make the lead 4-2 with 10:01 to go in the second quarter.

Ritchie and Byrnes each led the Cardinals with a game-high two goals while Henderson was the only player on the field to distribute two assists. Henderson also had a goal while Ritchie, Eric Klein and Mitch Bailey each had three ground balls.

Goalie Jamie Campagna was solid between the pipes, stopping 11 attempts on goal in the win. Ryan Freije went 12-for-20 on face-offs while Clint Masterson won his only attempt in the X.
