Hawks Ground Soaring Eagles on Senior Day
ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick men’s tennis snapped a five-match slide on Thursday with a thorough 7-2 victory over visiting Elmira College in Oneonta, NY. The Hawks swept all three doubles matches and earned singles wins in the top four flights over the Soaring Eagles to improve to 2-8 overall and 2-4 in the Empire 8.
The day also served as Hartwick Senior Day with
Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket Regional),
Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico/American Military Acad.),
Ron Lambertson (Wawarsing, NY/Ellenville HS) and
Bobby Amberson (Raeford, NC/Middletown HS) each being honored prior to the day’s matches.
The Hawks cruised in doubles dropping just eight total games. Boyd and
Peter Dumas (Albany, NY/Colonie HS) defeated Eric Klinedinst and Steffan Waters, 8-2, to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Navarro and
Brian Redder (Marion, NY/Williamson Central) took out Gorav Simlote and Sam Pine in second doubles, 8-3. Lambertson and
Will Gilbraith (West Monroe, NY/Paul V. Moore HS) downed George Smith and Dylan Christman, 8-3.
Boyd, Dumas, Navarro, and Amberson won in singles play for ’Wick. Boyd rolled over Klinedinst, 6-1, 6-0. He is now 5-5 on the year at the top spot.
Dumas bested Simlote, 6-4, 6-1, to improve to 5-1 this season. Navarro defeated Pine, 6-0, 6-4, to up his season mark to 5-2.
Amberson went the distance against Waters. He won the first set, 6-2, before Waters evened the match, 6-3, in the second. Amberson would emerge with the win in the super tie-breaker, 10-7.
Hartwick hits the road on Sunday with an Empire 8 road match at Stevens Institute of Technology. The Hawks and Ducks play in Hoboken at 12 p.m.
