St. John Fisher Sweeps Stevens
The St. John Fisher College softball program picked up two wins at Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals earned a 3-0 win in the opener and used a six-run fifth inning to pace the squad to a 7-1 win in the nightcap.
With the two wins, Fisher improves to 26-8 overall and 7-3 in the Empire 8 Conference.
Game One - Fisher 3, Stevens 0
Junior pitcher Danielle Leone raised her record to 15-2 on the year, allowing just five hits, three walks and three strikeouts over the seven innings.
Fisher mustered just four hits in the game, but was able to score a run in the second, third and fifth innings to secure the win.
Jennifer Martin singled in Carissa Carlson to put Fisher up for good in the second inning.
Megan Zoerb struck out , but reached on a wild pitch in the third. After a sacrifice bunt from Kayla Goodberlet, Leanne Merchant singled in a run.
Merchant doubled to deep left to score Jennifer Vanek in the fifth frame to close out the scoring.
Game Two – Fisher 7, Stevens 1
The Ducks took a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but pitcher Sarah Stefanon kept Stevens off the board after that. The junior scattered five hits and struck out six, raising her record to 11-6 on the year.
Fisher tied the game up at 1s in the fourth on a double to right from Sarah Fordyce, scoring Merchant.
The Cardinals used four hits to plate six runs in the fifth. Carlson came through with a two-run single, while Fordyce hit a three-run shot over the fence in right field to help the Cardinals pull away.
Fordyce finished with four RBI and two hits (a homer and a double) in the game. Zoerb went 2-for-4 in the win, while freshman Kate Disbrow singled and scored a run.
Fisher will return to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Elmira College.
