St. John Fisher Holds on to Beat Stevens at Home
Despite a late rally by the visitors, the St. John Fisher College women’s lacrosse team held on to defeat the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks by an 8-6 score at Growney Stadium. With the Empire 8 Conference win, Fisher now has a 4-1 mark, while improving to 9-4 on the season. Stevens falls to 3-2, 8-5 with the road loss.
With the score 8-3, Stevens scored the game’s final-three goals to push the Cardinals to the brink, but Fisher was able to maintain its two-goal lead for the win.
Fisher opened the game with a three-goal streak as Emily Bryerton, Taylor Hughes and Melissa Leonhard all connected in succession.
But Stevens would answer, scoring the first half’s final two goals and sending the Cardinals to the locker room with just a one-goal lead.
The Ducks opened the second stanza with a goal to tie things at 3-3, but Fisher rattled-off five-straight goals to make the game 8-3.
Leonhard scored three of her four goals in the span, while Hughes and Bryerton also tallied for a second time.
Fisher netminder Caroline Trpcevski made seven stops in the contest, denying the Ducks four times in the final 7:31 to help carry the Cardinals to victory.
The trio of Leonhard, Hughes and Bryerton scored all of Fisher’s goals, while Hughes also added two assists.
