St. John Fisher Takes Two from Utica to Push Win Streak to Nine
The St. John Fisher College picked up two more Empire 8 Conference wins on Saturday afternoon in Utica, NY against the host Pioneers. Fisher moved to 25-8 on the season and hold a 9-4 mark in conference play, all while pushing its current win streak to nine. The Cardinals and Utica will play a nine-inning game at 1 p.m. tomorrow and will finish an extra-innings game that was delayed earlier this season at Fisher’s Dugan Yard due to inclement weather.
Game One – Fisher 4, Utica 0:
Jason Beaumont cruised to another shutout win in the same fashion as last weekend’s scoreless victory over Ithaca, this time with a 4-0 decision over Utica. The senior did not allow a run in the complete game outing, surrendering just five hits and two walks while fanning eight Pioneers batters.
The Cardinals got all the run support they would need in the third inning when a leadoff walk by Ryan Shaughnessy made way for a Peter Krysztof RBI single to left field with two outs. Chris Roeder was the first out of that inning when he sacrifice bunted Shaughnessy to second.
Fisher added the rest of its four runs in the fifth inning, one of which was a solo home run to left field from Sean Osterman.
Steve Karnyski, Ben Bostick, Krysztof and Osterman were the only Cardinals with a hit in the game, while Krysztof led the team with two runs batted in.
Game Two – Fisher 12, Utica 6:
Ben Ward had a day in the second game, going 4-for-5 from the dish with three runs scored and a RBI, in a game when the Cardinals’ bats dominated. Six Fisher hitters had a multiple hit game in the nightcap, including Nicholas Flemister’s 2-for-3 with a team-best three runs driven in.
Krysztof, Bostick, Shaughnessy and Roeder all ended with two hits apiece.
Tim Johnson started on the hill and earned the win, throwing six innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out six.
Jordan Doroshenko threw two innings in relief, allowing just three hits and no runs while fanning four of his six outs.
Kieran Murphy pitched the ninth inning, allowing just a hit but gave up two earned runs due to three walks.
