Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women’s Lacrosse team outscored visiting Alfred University 11-1 in the second half en route to a 17-8 victory Saturday afternoon on Class of 2012 Recognition Day at Campus Field. The win improves the Soaring Eagles to 8-8 overall and 2-5 in Empire 8 action meaning they are eligible for postseason ECAC play ending the regular season with a .500 or better record. The loss drops the Saxons to 4-10 overall and 0-7 in conference competition.
Elmira scored the first three goals to start the game as they were energized from a jubilant crowd and atmosphere from its five members of the Class of 2012 who were honored before the game:
Meghan Pass ’12 (Owego, NY -- Owego Free Academy),
Lindsay Mitchell ’12 (Arnold, MD -- Arnold),
Jordan Donegan ’12 (Syracuse, NY -- Corcoran),
Marissa Drake ’12 (Schenectady, NY -- Schenectady) and
Sallie Wright ’12 (Horseheads, NY -- Notre Dame).
Mitchell fed
Pass for the first score just less than two minutes in and then found classmate
Donegan for another score at the 6:11 mark to extend EC’s lead to 3-0. Alfred responded with a pair of Ashley White and Devin Fitzgerald goals to take a 4-3 lead. The teams then exchanged three goals as Alfred took a 7-6 lead into intermission.
The second half proved to be a completely different story as the Soaring Eagles dominated scoring 11 of the 12 goals in the half.
Mitchell scored five times after halftime and
Pass added two while six different Elmira players scored in the half. EC held a distinctive advantage in the second half in shots (26-5), ground balls (30-10) and draw controls (11-2).
Mitchell led the Purple and Gold attack tallying five goals two assists, nine draw control wins and a remarkable 16 ground balls.
Pass finished with four goals, while
Samantha Risi ’14 (Coopersburg, PA -- Southern Lehigh) and
Emma Schepers ’13 (Elmvale, ONT -- Team Ontario) recorded a pair of scores and added an assist.
Jessica Blinkinsop ’14 (Temecula, CA -- Great Oak) finished with a goal and assist, earning four draw controls, while
Rebecca Matturro ’14 (Smithtown, NY -- Smithtown) picked up seven ground balls.
MaryKate Gellerman ’13 (Frederick, MD -- Urbana) stopped eight shots in the win for EC.
