Ithaca Powers to 11-2 Victory at Alfred
Alfred, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men’s lacrosse team (6-3, 1-0 Empire 8) opened its Empire 8 season with a dominant 11-2 victory at Alfred (3-7, 0-2 Empire 8) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bombers jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led 7-1 at the half. The Saxons netted the first of the third, but Ithaca closed out the game with four consecutive to snap a three-game losing skid.
Seniors Devin Weinshank and Billy LaPerch were joined by sophomore Jacob Long in scoring a pair of goals each. Sophomores Pat Slawta and Casey Schattner each dished out two assists.
Junior Adam Wacenske scooped up a team-high four ground balls and added a game-best three caused turnovers. Freshman Matt Greenblatt won five faceoffs and senior Brian DiBetta three.
Senior Brendan Green returned to the cage after a one-game absence to record the win. He made seven stops for the Bombers.
Ithaca held a 30-22 advantage in shots and a 27-21 edge in ground balls. Each team won eight faceoffs.
Five different Bombers scored in Ithaca’s opening run. Long got it all started just 1:41 into play on a Slawta assist, LaPerch added another and senior Jay Lucas used a Schattner assist to lead 3-0 at the end of the first.
Freshman Jamies Manilla and Weinshank scored back-to-back goals in the second stint for a 5-0 Ithaca gap. Alfred broke the ice at 4:23, but Schattner found Weinshank and Long went unassisted within 30 seconds of one another to take a 7-1 lead into intermission.
The Saxons struck first in the third. LaPerch and Wacenske scored before Slawta used a Steve Danylyshyn dish and senior Tom Mongelli capitalized on a Connor Lowe pass to finalize all scoring, 11-2, in the final frame.
